Barre 3

July 1 I started a 28 day #barre3anywhere challenge put on by Barre3. This is a nation wide Barre studio that offers online classes as well so you can do them anywhere even if a location isn’t convenient for you. This  28 day challenge involved 6 videos a week and one rest day. The videos ranged in length from 10 minutes to 30 minutes but don’t let that 10 minute number fool you, some of those were the hardest and left me really feeling the shake.

You can really do them anywhere. I did most of the videos on my lunch break in our living room. It was a great break from the computer and re-energized me for the rest of the day.

There are so many variations that no matter what your level or injury status is so you can do these workouts. I did have to do variations since I am pregnant and as the bump grew through the month some of the positions did get a little tricky. It was great to really work on my lower back and leg strength. You can add weights for added strength training for your arms as well.

Check out their website to see if there is a location near you and if not you can sign up for a free online trial and you can do these workouts anywhere. There is no excuse to not give it a try and see the transformation you can make in a short period of time.

R&G Fitness

I love to try new workouts and gyms well, R&G Fitness was really outside of my comfort zone. It is group fitness that focuses on weights and dynamic movements with cardio mixed it. The focus of form and pushing your limits is amazing. I enjoy what the coach’s give me form critiques or edits because I can’t always see what I am doing and form only enhances the benefits of working out.

I don’t always push myself on my own as hard as I should with the amount of weight I use but R&G sure does and I love it. It gave me that boost of confidence that I can lift that 25lb weight. Maybe not for many reps but I can do it.

The class has a warm up and then breaks into groups to rotate though different stations and then you come back together at the end for a stretch. I love that it is different every time focusing on all muscle groups and pushing you forward. Every person I met was welcoming, kind and supportive of each other weather it was a first time or a seasoned vet at the gym. Everyone cheers for each other and really helps to motivate you to do more.

You can download their app and get a free trial but trust me you are going to want to stay a member! I can’t wait to go back for more, even if I can’t feel my arms! 🙂

Just Strong

I am so excited to share about the Just Strong clothing brand. I have been trying out their gear and I truly love the pieces. The fabric is breathable, supportive and durable. The designs are motivating and great looking on the clothes. They are about empowering women and pushing though not only your strength battles but every battles in life and just supporting each other and moving forward.

The symbol – the squat.

“The squat is the perfect analogy for life – it’s about standing back up after something heavy gets you down and what better way to present this analogy by using it in our branding. We are here to empower and motivate strong women from every walk of life.”

They have some fun tanks and t’s with great sayings and quotes such as “Will Gym For Pizza” so true and fun. They have different cuts and styles of leggings and sports bras for the many different body types. I truly recommend you give them a try.

Title Boxing Club McKinney

I tried out a local boxing gym, Title Boxing Club McKinney, and boy was it a blast! One of the hardest classes but also one of the most fun.

We started with a warm up and that alone really got your heart pumping and the sweat flowing. Next was 8 rounds with the bag including calisthenics in between, ending with abs and stretch. Does it sound easy? Well it wasn’t!

It was my first class with the gloves and my hands didn’t really enjoy being confined that long. I found myself wanting to take the gloves off and stretch my fingers. I didn’t but I really felt relief when we took them off for the abs. I believe over time my hands will adjust just like with anything else. It was also surprising to me how much it took to move the bag, that isn’t the goal, but realizing the force behind a punch to move a 100 lb bag is more than you think. FORM is much more important!

Anthony taught the class and he was wonderful. I really like that he noticed each person in the class and gave individual notes to each person to make sure the form and combination was correct. It is hard for me to fully understand just hearing over the microphone, especially with the music too. I really like to be able to see a demo first so I can make sure I am processing it correctly. I was positioned in a great place to be able to see him which really helped. They also taught me how to wrap my hands and assisted with everyone who had questions. The team was very concerned that each and every student in class had proper equipment, form and got a great workout for every different level. Each class is open to all levels and modifications are available to meet all needs. Don’t be shy and head on over.

Every person from the front desk, instructor and owner were welcoming, educational and personable. Don’t miss trying this great workout and your first class is free! I can’t wait to go back. Their website below has their class schedule and videos about what to expect.

Gym Pet Peeves

I love going to the gym and working out, however I really do not when people don’t follow gym etiquette! Below are some of my pet peeves that I see people doing all the time. If you are going to the gym please make sure you follow gym etiquette.

Image result for gym

  1. Clean your machine. I cannot stress this enough, do you want to use a machine covered in a stranger’s sweat? I didn’t think so. All gyms have the cleaning rags all over, after EVERY machine or piece of equipment you use wipe it down.
  2. Put your stuff away. If you are getting out several size weights, medicine ball and other items to get your sweat on wonderful, now put it all back when you are done. Other people are going to want to use the equipment and shouldn’t have to go on a wild goose chase to find it.
  3. Kids running around. Many gyms have a kids area where they can go while you workout, if your gym doesn’t then you need to make arrangements for your child while you work out. A young child running around can get seriously injured in a gym. This goes for those middle school aged/teenage kids as well, if they are not there to work out and you are not able to keep your eye on them they do not need to be there. This is not a playground.
  4. Give people space. Don’t hover over someone while they are exercising, leave room and if you are waiting on a machine give the person space to finish what they are doing and time to clean the machine then go over.
  5. Cell phone use. If you are going to have a phone conversation step outside, don’t disturb everyone else in the gym. If you are just going to sit on a machine and text or check social media for long extended periods of time, maybe just stay at home. If this is too tempting for you leave your phone in the car. Focus on what you are doing to get the best results.

I see these happen everyday and it can be really frustrating for people who are there and serious about their gym time. If it is your first time going to the gym ask for a tour and learn any specific rules the gym you are attending have. This way you are ready to go!

Mixing It Up

Getting back into a consistent workout routine has been wonderful, even it I really didn’t take any time off. The stress relief, sweat and over all feeling after a great workout really makes me feel amazing as part of my over all mental health.

I have been doing virtual spin classes, TRX, weights, cardio and yoga. I really like to mix things up and not do the same thing everyday. It is also better for your body to keep it guessing and keep the changes coming. Your body will get used to the same thing over and over; making the results much less apparent if at all. This is where a lot of people plateau, get discouraged and quit.

DON’T QUIT, try something new. Is there a class you have always wanted to try? Do it. If your gym doesn’t have classes or you workout at home use the internet. Google free workout videos, search for different combos online there are so many things to choose from. You can try one of the combos under the Home Workouts section of my blog. If you normally hike or run try mixing in some weight training. Cardio is great but you need to build that muscle to keep changing and burning.

Whatever it is don’t be afraid to try something new. You never know what you will fall in love with or really give you a great workout.

Go To Treadmill Workout

After getting the home gym set up in our new place I was ready to get my sweat going. Below is my go to Treadmill workout.

5 minutes walking medium speed ( I wear ankle weights and a waste trainer to add sweat)

25-40 squats (depending on your level)

5 minutes on treadmill up your speed

15-20 lunges each leg (depending on your speed)

5 minutes on treadmill up your speed

25-40 sit ups (depending on your level)

5 minutes on treadmill up your speed

25-40 squats (depending on your level)

5 minutes on treadmill up your speed

15-20 lunges each leg (depending on your level)

5 minutes on treadmill lower your speed for cool down

25-40 sit ups (depending on your level)

This is a great way to get a good cardio and full body strength workout in. A lot of people have a hard time staying on a treadmill for long periods of time, this gives you quick on and off so your time goes by quickly and before you know it your workout is over. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
