Walking It Off

Walking postpartum has really been such a blessing for me. I haven’t been able to consistently find the time yet for workouts so being able to walk with the babe has been keeping me active and getting us both outside. (She loves to be outside)

I try to do 2 miles a day but that is getting very difficult with the Texas heat. She is not a fan and is very hot blooded, we have a fan but it’s not enough. I have to find a time when the temp isn’t too crazy and then it’s as far as we can go, usually just over a mile.

With this goal in mind it has still be so great for my physical and mental health to continue to walk every day. It allows me to feel like I am moving my body and gives me time away from the long to do list that never ends at the house.

Benefits of Walking (A prior post)

Studies show that walking 30 minutes a day can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by up to 27%. I will take all the help I can get so lets go! Walking uses your entire body and improves circulation which helps control blood pressure and cholesterol. If you are walking outside you will also enjoy the Vitamin D.

Walking is low impact and easy on your joints. You can walk your neighborhood, beach, country side or anywhere at all. Pop in some head phones and enjoy your favorite music and take some me time.

Walking with me is almost like a run, BUT I do NOT run! I walk very fast and with a purpose. You don’t have to do this but it is kinda fun. In the nice weather I take my lunch break and walk around the office buildings, this is an easy way to take a break from work and get in that 30 minutes. It doesn’t have to be hard, make it enjoyable take your kids, pets, family or just go on you own.

Additional benefits are improving your mood, balance, strengthening your bones and muscles. Take advantage of this full body exercise and start with a fun way to begin your healthy lifestyle.

Walking and Pregnancy

As you know I love to go on a walk or hike and I have shared the benefits of walking on a regular basis before. I have continued walking though my pregnancy as well and the benefits are great for this time as well.

A lot of people can fall into laying on the couch or eliminating activity during pregnancy because, lets face it, it can be really hard. The growing belly, back pain, swelling, balance changing, exhaustion and I could go on forever but I won’t. Some days after a full day of working the last thing I want to do is walk or work out BUT pushing through will benefit me more than sitting on the couch.

Benefits of Walking During Pregnancy

  • Helps to burn calories to assist with too much weight gain
  • Helps to protect against developing gestational diabetes & preeclampisia
  • Eases constipation
  • A great way to have Me Time

  • Helps you to sleep better
  • Assists in getting back in shape after giving birth

These benefits are enough reasons for me to keep moving. I try to walk at least 5 days a week and also incorporate other workouts and activity into my week. This past week I did 6 days in a row of walking at almost 10 miles.

Listen to your body and make sure you have water and a phone with you just in case you need help.
