Can you even believe we are half way through 2018? I really can’t. This year has really posed many challenges for me mentally and physically. I have encountered things I never imagined would be a part of my life, good and bad. I have had moments I wish never happened and moments I wish could last forever. Our lives change everyday and sometimes we need to take a moment and check in with ourselves and what is really going on.
So here is my check in.
This year I wanted to focus on my mental health. I have taken several steps to that, I have tried therapy, attend church regularly, use essential oils, read more, focus on my sleep schedule, stay active and try to communicate more effectively. Each one of these things helps with my mental focus/personal stability. I am in no way perfect at any of these. I don’t attend therapy regularly and I don’t think I will at this time. I have had some Sundays that I just couldn’t get out of bed. I stay up to late. I focus on the negative. I skip a workout (yes I do that too!) I am here to tell you that it’s hard. It is hard for all of us.
I do notice a difference however and trying is half the battle. Everyday I truly wake up with a positive attitude and a feeling of new opportunity. Some days this lasts longer than others. lol I keep my to do lists with me at all times to help keep me focused on my day and I include the fun stuff on that list to so I make sure to make that time for myself. I have had some days when I finished it all, with some extra and had time to spare. Other days I look at the list and wonder what did I do today?
However last year I wasn’t doing a lot of these things and I really think my mental focus and health has improved. Waking up each day happy and ready for the day is a huge benefit. Don’t let your small mistakes take your focus off the change you want to create. If you fall one day that’s ok, try again the next. Nothing changes in the an instant. It’s all a process.
What goals did you set for your year? How are you doing with them? Check in and share some of your tips and tricks with us.
May was full of travel for me, which can be tough trying to stay on track with your health and fitness goals. I am going to share with you a few tips that help me. I traveled this past month for work and pleasure and those offer different challenges when staying on track.
When people travel for pleasure they tend to give in more to the tempting treats or ignore those workouts. I do my best to stay active and eat well. I went to visit family in Cincinnati and since my niece is just over a year old she offers a free workout! Just playing, chasing and walking with her can give me my activity for the day. Take time to go on walks in the morning or evening to keep you moving, plan to do an activity that will get your heart rate up and allow you to see the sights. We attended a wedding so dancing the night away on the dace floor counts. It all counts! You just want to stay active everyday.
Eating is the next thing that people really have a difficult time with, when traveling for pleasure I do allow myself a treat. At the wedding I enjoyed a piece of cake, but when it was meal time the buffet allowed me the opportunity to have some lean chicken and vegetables. Making balanced choices will allow you to get home and not feel like you over did it and have to start over, it should be a smooth transition back into you normal routine.
When traveling for work there are work dinners and team lunches and this can be tricky. A lot of people may not be making the healthiest choices around you so your will power needs to kick in here. I start my day with breakfast at the hotel, they usually have great options from eggs, lean meats, oatmeal and fruits, but will also offer bagels, cereal, waffles and sugary goodness. I never like to indulge at breakfast because then I am unhappy the rest of the day. I normally choose hard boiled eggs, fruit and oatmeal (always with coffee!) This allows me to feel full until lunch. When that times comes around I choose a salad, no dressing or lean meat and veggies. Another filling meal with flavor. Be careful with your salad choice, a salad with fried everything is not a good choice. My trick is I put my order in and then ask what other people are getting this way I don’t get pressured or swayed into something I will regret. At dinner I allow myself to have whatever I want because I don’t just say no all the time and I do like to try new things. I also enjoy a desert every once in a while but I normally choose the smaller item or ice cream option, this gives me my sweet fix but I am not eating an entire piece of cake and ice cream.
Staying in a hotel offers the opportunity to use the gym. I go at least 50% of the time I am staying in a hotel. Morning or evening, it just depends on what works with the daily schedule. I mark it in my calendar and make sure it is done like any other appointment I would have. This also helps me not feel too bad about that desert or dinner option I may choose. Staying active on a work trip is key to feel great when you return. It can be easy to stay out, not get up as early and totally ignore any activity. Make it a priority even a walk at lunch is a great choice.
We celebrated Sean’s Birthday just before Christmas. We went to X Golf San Antonio and had a great time. It is a virtual golf experience. We golfed Pebble Beach and boy was it hard for me lol
The screen gives you a lot of information so you can golf as if you are really on the course you select. We took our own clubs but you can rent some there. They have a full bar and food from Mellow Mushroom just a few businesses away. I would recommend this for anyone who loves to golf.
They offer leagues, lessons and so much more. We have gone back since and had another great experience. The second time I did much better as well, I felt a little more prepared. You can reserve your time slot by calling or visiting their website. http://www.goxgolf.com/
We had a great time and the service was the best. The employers and manager are so friendly and very helpful with the equipment and system. Let me know how your experience is!
Christmas this year was a little bitter sweet for me. It was the first time we didn’t see our families in the eight years we have been together. With all of the changes and traveling in November it just wasn’t possible this year. We were all together in spirit and talked on the phone but it just wasn’t the same.
We made the best of it and spent our time together enjoying some rest and new traditions. I had been wanting to visit the Don Strange Christmas lights here in Boerne and on Christmas Eve after the candle light service we headed out to see them. It was very impressive, driving through tunnels of lights and seeing all of the moving lights. They had a police car chasing a vehicle, golfers, gingerbread men throwing a ball and so much more. There is also a little village you can visit with shops and sweet treats. I loved that we waiting until Christmas Eve to drive through.
Christmas day was spent at home in our pajamas all day. We slowly opened our gifts and grilled steaks for dinner. It was a nice way to enjoy our first holiday in 8 years on our own.
For those of you who are new to the blog, I am from Indiana and we moved to Texas in 2015. I was blessed enough to spend 2 and 1/2 weeks in Indiana in November. I celebrated Thanksgiving and my niece’s first birthday. I enjoyed family time, food, hiking, play time and my high school friends.
One of my favorite things about going back is the small town I grew up in, believe me at the time I didn’t appreciate it then, but now when I get to visit I love that I know someone everywhere I go. It take just 5 minutes to get to my friends house and I get to eat at all of my favorite places. My sister and her family live in the house I grew up in and that is such a blessing. My niece is growing up in the room my sister and I shared as little girls. We didn’t always share it the best but we are closer than ever now. It is so amazing to see my baby sister being a mom, she is the best and my niece is very blessed. Her dad is pretty awesome too. We celebrated Thanksgiving at their house, which also happened to be Kylie’s first birthday. It was a wonderful day full of laughing and eating. Kylie loved all of the singing for her.
My sister and I took Kylie on a 3 mile walk around the house. We enjoyed some beautiful sunny time in November. We also went to Houston Woods State Park and hiked all over. Kylie slept most of the time so we had some fun being creative with our photos. We also got to see some gorgeous animals they have rescued. Being outside is so amazing, I didn’t appreciate it when I was younger, my family will attest to that, but now I love to hike and see what all nature has to offer. I will still freak out about bugs though so be on the look out. 🙂
It was wonderful to spend some time with my brother as well. He is hard to track down with his crazy travel schedule for his job, but when we are in town he always makes time to laugh with us.
There is so much I could share but the only part I cared about was spending time with my family. I wish I could see them everyday, when you get older and move out you really start to realize how lucky you are to grow up with everyone around you all the time.
What are some of your favorite memories with your family?
I am so excited to welcome you to wynnsparksfly! I have been wanting to do this for so long and finally here it is. Day-to-day woman was a great way for me to start my blog and share so much of my journey with you but wynnsparksfly was always my goal. I am going to continue to share with you my health and fitness journey. I have up graded my home gym, do regular group fitness classes and eat as healthy as I can. I will also be sharing the products I use and love along with the places I love to go.
Change is difficult for a lot of people and over the past several months/year I have gone through a lot of change and experienced a lot of changes around me. Some of them are wonderful and some have been hard to understand, each one has a purpose though and has brought me to where I am today. I am thankful for that. I have grown a lot and learned so much, life will continue to change with me and around me for a lifetime and I am going to do my best to embrace it all, even when it’s hard. I am going to share some of my changes along the way.
Being able to bring this goal to life is something I am very proud of. I am happy to bring it to life and share it with you. I hope you enjoy my journey and feel free to reach out and let me know what questions you have or what you want to hear about from me.
I have moved the past year of posts from Day-to-Day Woman here including the features of businesses and products I have loved. Check them out!
