Skin Care/Beautycounter

Recently a friend introduced me to some new skin care products, make up and hair care. I have really enjoyed the products I have tried so of course I am going to share. 🙂

I try to be knowledgeable about what goes into the products I put in and on my body. It can be very difficult to get a lot of information about beauty products or personal care products because they are not monitored or required to leave out harmful chemicals. Recently there has been a large surge in people bringing awareness to this issue, including my girl Kourtney Kardashian. (As you know I love my reality TV)

I would really love to be able to go to the store and know that the products on the shelf are safe. We just aren’t there yet. Other countries are far ahead of us in this area.

Anyway! BeautyCounter, these products never use 15000+ ingredients that are harmful (including the 14000 banned from being used in European countries). 80% are naturally sourced or plan derived. The most important part to me is the transparency! They share everything that they are using, no guessing games. They also keep up on all the research being done to continue to grow and develop only the best safe products for your use.

I have been using one of their holiday bundles (which was a great deal) it includes the cleansing balm, balancing facial mask, moisturizer and brightening oil. I have loved each one. The cleansing balm is different than any cleanser I have used, it is thick and tacky but after using for about 2 weeks now it really works great. My skin feels soft and clean with a brightness. TIP: use a washcloth to rinse off to ensure you remove all the balm. After cleansing I use the mask twice a week, as it dries you can really see it getting into all of your pores and tightening your skin. I love to really get in deep to my pores so this is great for that.

The brightening oil I use twice a week as well and it just gives my skin a little kick and adds to the softness. Especially during the winter this is great to counter act the dry air. The Adaptive Moisture Lotion is by far my favorite! The texture rubs on so smooth and a little goes a long way making it last. The smell in AMAZING and the way it balances out my skin all day long really makes it look and feel great.

Take a look at the link below for so many more products and what options are out there for you to get safer personal care products you don’t have to worry about! Tina Herbert has introduced me to these and is a great source of information. Don’t hesitate to ask her questions.

Kate Somerville Mask

I have tried a lot of Kate Somerville products and normally love them. This Exfoliate mask is a great texture, color, smell and always love the packaging. However I didn’t have the best experience with this mask.

When I put the mask on the consistency was great, it was just the right thickness and went on easy and lathered well. After the instructed 30 seconds of rubbing in you let it sit for 2 minutes. Well, that is when the burn set in and boy did it burn. I could barely stand it but I thought maybe it was just the first time so I did the 2 minutes and rinsed off. My face wasn’t red or anything like that, the results were great. My skin was smooth and radiant.

It was recommended to do 2-3 times per week so the second time I followed the instructions and I couldn’t make it through the 2 minutes because the sting/burn was just too much for me to handle. Again no red skin I felt like they were good results again.

Over all this just doesn’t work well for me. I don’t want burning from a face mask even if I get good results. It may work for your skin type but not for me.

Skin Care

Recently I have really been trying to find new products for my skin care. I have noticed a lot of changes and I really haven’t gotten into a good routine. I have found, that for me, I need something I can grab in a store and not order online or through a seller. I don’t order in advance so I need to just go pick some up. I also don’t like a super expensive price tag so that is important to me. I don’t personally think I have to stick with a full line either, I am mixing and matching what I like best. Here is what I am currently using.

  1. Hill Country Make Up Remover Wipes / For those of you not in Texas, this is the HEB version. I have also used Neutrogena and fine them to work exactly the same so I purchase whichever is less $$$ – I use this wipe first to remove all my make up for the day or to refresh after a workout.
  2. Fresh Foaming Cleanser / Neutrogena – I really like this cleanser, it gets deep into my pores and my face looks fresh with no residue after using. I use this after the make up remover.
  3. Pore Refining Toner / Neutrogena – I have actually used this for a couple of years and every time I stop using it regularly I see my pores getting huge again. A bottle last a long time too because you just use a little bit on a cotton ball after cleansing.
  4. Pore Strips / Biore – My mom introduced these to me when I was younger (oh happy days) I love them. I actually really love to see everything they pull out of my skin. I buy the value pack that has the nose strips along with the one for your forehead. I cut the one for your forehead in half and use it on either side of my nose strip to get the additional pores on my cheeks. I also do the same with another strip for the chin. I do this once every other week after cleansing/before toner.
  5. Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream / Aveeno – I grabbed this one day because it was on sale and I feel in love. After washing my face at night I put this on my face, neck and back of my hands. I let it all soak in and my face feels so soft and I can see a difference in the evenness of my skin.

I try my best to do this every night. Sometimes I am lazy and it’s the last thing on my mind but I really see a big difference when I stick to it. I see less oil on my face half way through the day and less outbreaks, which have become a thing now that I am 30. Aging is fun. Try some of these if you are on the search and don’t be afraid to mix and match brands & products.

Salt – So Many Kinds

Did you know there are 12 different kinds of salt? Sheesh which one should you use? What is best? What is the difference? Well recently I started looking into this more after trying Himalayan Pink Salt, it got me curious.

  1. Table Salt
  2. Kosher Salt
  3. Sea Salt
  4. Himalayan Pink Salt
  5. Celtic Sea Salt
  6. Fleur De Sel
  7. Kala Namak
  8. Flake Salt
  9. Red Hawaiian Salt
  10. Black Hawaiian Salt
  11. Smoked Salt
  12. Pickling Salt

I hadn’t heard of so many of these, they each have their own benefit and best use. Table Salt is the most common and what you see most of the time being used. It is easy to cook with and it’s fine grain allows it to dissolve quickly. Kosher Salt is flakier and with it’s larger size is great for sprinkling on top of meat to add flavor and texture. (It is not necessarily certified Kosher)

We use mostly sea salt in our house, it comes from evaporated sea water. It is normally unrefined and a larger grain. It can also contain other minerals from where it was harvested, depending on its surroundings. Each can have a different taste because of this.

Of the different types of salt, Himalayan Pink Salt is the purest form of salt in the world and is harvested by hand from Khewra Salt Mine in the Himalayan Mountains of Pakistan. Its color can range from off-white to deep pink. It contains the 84 natural minerals and elements found in the human body. It is used in spa treatments, as well as the kitchen.

Celtic Salt comes from the bottom of tidal ponds off the coast of France. It is more of a chunky texture, is moist and briney tasting. Fleur De Sel is the most expensive salt, this is due to the way it is harvested. It is a very delicate process and can only happen in weather appropriate conditions. It is hand-harvested from tidal pools off the coast of Brittany, France. Paper-thin crystals are delicately drawn from the water’s surface, a lot like cream is taken from milk. This can only be done on sunny, dry days with a slight breeze, and only with traditional wooden rakes. Someone please try it and tell me if it’s worth the cost!

Kala namak is Himalayan salt that’s been packed in a jar with charcoal, herbs, seeds and bark, then fired in a furnace for 24 hours. Flake salt is thin and papery with a bright, salty taste and very low mineral content. It dissolves quickly for great cooking. Black Hawaiian salt, comes from Hawaii (shocking right lol), the black color comes from the active charcoal, it is course and crunchy. They suggest it for finishing pork and fish.  Red Hawaiian Salt gets it color from the iron rich volcanic clay. It is good for cooking seafood.

Smoked Salt is smoked over a variety of woods to give it a different flavor and normally takes up to 2 weeks to smoke. It can add another level of flavor to veggies when cooking. Pickling Salt is used for pickling and brining, it does not contain any added iodine or anti-caking agents.

So with all of that I see why people use all types. After trying the Himalayan Pink Salt and not knowing all of it’s benefits I really liked it. I could tell a difference in the flavor and it was perfect when I was cooking my pasta. Try them all and let me know what you think.

What’s in my gym bag?

I pack my gym bag the night before because I work out so early it allows me a few extra minutes of sleep. Since I work out first and then go to work my gym bag might be packed backwards from most people who pack to go to the gym. I pack to go to work.

The first thing I do is decide what outfit I will be wearing to work, I make sure to have all aspects of that outfit including shoes are in the bag. Next I get together any jewelry I will be wearing with the outfit. I place all of that in the bag. Now I add in my personal care items; deodorant, hair products, make up and face wipes.

IMG_3593

I also double check any after work plans I have to ensure I have what I need for that as well. Maybe an outfit change or layering of clothes, sometimes even another workout.

Once I have it all together I put everything in the bag and place it in my closet. I get my workout clothes and shoes for the morning and place them on top of the bag. This way in the morning I go into my closet and get my workout gear on, grab my bag and after washing my face and brushing my teeth I am ready for the day.

I need all the extra sleep I can get!
