Check In

Can you even believe we are half way through 2018? I really can’t. This year has really posed many challenges for me mentally and physically. I have encountered things I never imagined would be a part of my life, good and bad. I have had moments I wish never happened and moments I wish could last forever. Our lives change everyday and sometimes we need to take a moment and check in with ourselves and what is really going on.

So here is my check in.

This year I wanted to focus on my mental health. I have taken several steps to that, I have tried therapy, attend church regularly, use essential oils, read more, focus on my sleep schedule, stay active and try to communicate more effectively. Each one of these things helps with my mental focus/personal stability. I am in no way perfect at any of these. I don’t attend therapy regularly and I don’t think I will at this time. I have had some Sundays that I just couldn’t get out of bed. I stay up to late. I focus on the negative. I skip a workout (yes I do that too!) I am here to tell you that it’s hard. It is hard for all of us.

I do notice a difference however and trying is half the battle. Everyday I truly wake up with a positive attitude and a feeling of new opportunity. Some days this lasts longer than others. lol I keep my to do lists with me at all times to help keep me focused on my day and I include the fun stuff on that list to so I make sure to make that time for myself. I have had some days when I finished it all, with some extra and had time to spare. Other days I look at the list and wonder what did I do today?

However last year I wasn’t doing a lot of these things and I really think my mental focus and health has improved. Waking up each day happy and ready for the day is a huge benefit. Don’t let your small mistakes take your focus off the change you want to create. If you fall one day that’s ok, try again the next. Nothing changes in the an instant. It’s all a process.

What goals did you set for your year? How are you doing with them? Check in and share some of your tips and tricks with us.

What’s in my gym bag?

I pack my gym bag the night before because I work out so early it allows me a few extra minutes of sleep. Since I work out first and then go to work my gym bag might be packed backwards from most people who pack to go to the gym. I pack to go to work.

The first thing I do is decide what outfit I will be wearing to work, I make sure to have all aspects of that outfit including shoes are in the bag. Next I get together any jewelry I will be wearing with the outfit. I place all of that in the bag. Now I add in my personal care items; deodorant, hair products, make up and face wipes.

I also double check any after work plans I have to ensure I have what I need for that as well. Maybe an outfit change or layering of clothes, sometimes even another workout.

Once I have it all together I put everything in the bag and place it in my closet. I get my workout clothes and shoes for the morning and place them on top of the bag. This way in the morning I go into my closet and get my workout gear on, grab my bag and after washing my face and brushing my teeth I am ready for the day.

I need all the extra sleep I can get!

House Happenings

I always say everything counts in being active and house projects are a big part of that. The yard work, house work and DIY projects usually give you a great sweat and keep you moving.

We have been doing several different projects around the house along with the normal activities of mowing, weeding, watering, cleaning the house and all the fun stuff! We have had a year long battle with armadillos, I can’t even believe I am saying that but it’s true. They have destroyed our yard by digging a hole and coming under our fence from the nature center behind us, they burrow into the ground looking for bugs so it uproots everything. About a week ago I had a run in with 2 of them (huge by the way) very early in the morning while I was trying to get to a workout. The dogs went crazy. Needless to say it was time to fill the hole. We decided to fill in the hole and line our fence along the back with stones to ensure they don’t come back. So far it is working!

We also did a full house clean out, we went room to room and got rid of everything. I went through every drawer, closet, cabinet and corner. After it filled almost an entire bedroom, I mean what on earth, after selling some things, giving some away and donating the room is cleared out again and I feel so much better.

Trimming trees and bushes, planting new plants, tending the yard to repair from the armadillo damage has take up several days/weekends as well.

Next on our list is to hang a new chandelier and paint our kitchen island. I am hoping to do these this week! Wish me luck on the chandelier.

Sister Creek Vineyards

Saturday we headed north to check out Sister Creek Vineyards. I have heard great things so we wanted to see what it was all about. It was a quick drive from our house full of beautiful hill country scenery.

We started with the self guided tour that shows the different equipment they use and many of the barrels the wine is aging in. After the self guided tour of the 5 rooms we sat down for the tasting. We did the 8 glasses allowing us to try all the wine, or can can do a 4 glass tasting as well. (The 8 is $12.95 and the 4 is $9.95.) We enjoyed many of the wines but are fans of the whites over red. Our favorite was the Muscat Reserve and we left with 2 bottles for our house, come over and have a glass with us. :)The staff is wonderful and very knowledgeable, we had a great time with our tasting specialist and he was full of fun knowledge.

They have a wine club you can join as well with no strings attached. Those are the kinds of clubs we like for sure.

We had a great time and defiantly recommend a trip out for yourself to check them out and try the wines.

Active

I have been staying active and finding some time to sweat everyday weather that is a walk, home workout or group fitness class, even house work. Mixing it up and doing something everyday keeps me feeling energized and my body changing. On mornings when I can’t make it to an early class I love using my home gym to get a great sweat and strength challenge, an evening walk is a great way to get out and enjoy the Texas heat along with a great cardio workout for your body.

Grab some friends and head to a class, go on a walk or put on some head phones and get lost in the music, before you know it you will have completed a great sweat secession for your body.

I also love to hike around the parks, nature centers or preserves near me, most have free entry and allow you to explore while getting in that activity for the day. Free and a fun family workout…how can you say no to that?
