Guest Blogger – Fitness Journey

I am so excited to introduce you to Baylee! She is one of the newest instructors at B Well, in Boerne. I have taken her spinning classes and they are great, you must come and try one. Read her journey to becoming an instructor below, you never know where life will lead.

I consider myself to be one of the least athletic people I know. While my high school classmates scored goals and made touchdowns (still working on my sports terminology), I spent my free time warming up my vocals in choir and memorizing play scripts. While I am beyond thankful for the experiences that the fine arts gave me, I couldn’t help but feel like my lack of athletic experience resulted in me not knowing the value of physical fitness or how to “do exercise”. 

As a result of my years of apathy, I spent the next several years trying and failing to create healthy fitness habits. I’d show up to a gym and have no idea what to do — so I’d just leave! I tried running, but it felt too monotonous and time-consuming for my on-the-go personality. I even tried at-home fitness videos, all of which would last a good 6 minutes before I got bored and found something else to do. I came to a point where I gave up on trying and accepted that I was just not cut out for fitness. 

Eventually, I got sick and tired of feeling sick and tired (what happens when you live an extremely inactive lifestyle) and decided I needed a change. I was new to Boerne and a friend recommended B Well Health & Fitness. My first reaction was absolutely not — I could never fit in at one of those elite fitness studios. My inability to keep up with everyone else would be embarrassing, and I definitely don’t look the part. I even thought about starting a new workout plan to get in shape before I joined B Well (I know, it makes zero sense at all). On top of that, I was just not “cut out” for fitness — it just wouldn’t work out. 

After weeks of encouraging and nudging me, I finally caved and signed up for a one month membership (let’s be honest, I didn’t plan on even sticking around that long). Anxiously, I stepped into the studio for my first class and was immediately greeted by a welcoming staff member. “This isn’t so bad..” I remember thinking. I’m not going to sugar-coat it, the classes were CHALLENGING. However, the genuine encouragement by the instructors as well as the other clients gave me a boost of confidence to keep working at it. 

It didn’t take long at all before I realized all of my preconceived notions about B Well were dead wrong. The instructors weren’t intimidating — they are were my biggest encouragers and supporters! The other members weren’t conceited or elite athletes. In fact, the one thing that has made me fall in love with B Well is the people. No two members are the same, but we all come together in a class with our own goals and victories, regardless of where we are in our fitness journey. 

Before I knew it, I was everything I thought I couldn’t be. Someone who loved to work out! Don’t get me wrong — I still love to sleep in and get tempted to skip a class every now and then. BUT, I genuinely enjoy showing up, working hard, and celebrating small (and huge!) victories with my fellow B Well tribe. I loved it so much that one day a thought popped into my mind: “Why am I not teaching this?” I took my new passion and ran with it — I became a certified group fitness instructor! Now, I’m teaching classes that I love with people that I love — and all it took was STARTING somewhere.

If you would have told me a year ago that I’d spend more than one day a month exercising, I would have laughed in your face. If you would have told me a year ago that I’d be TEACHING fitness classes, I would probably have fallen to the ground in hysterical laughter. But guess what? I’m doing it! I’m thrilled to be sharing my story because I know there are so many of you out there who have similar experiences and (for whatever reason it may be) are too afraid to jump in. Here’s my advice: wherever you are in your fitness (or life!) journey, you are welcome here! There’s no better time to get started than this moment, right now. And I can promise you that once you get started, you’ll be unstoppable!
